Five ways to win.

A radar gun answers one question. These five answer the rest. They are the reason two pitchers with the same fastball get outs in completely different ways. Here is what each pitcher type looks like when you rank it against everybody.

The measurements

What each one tells you.

A percentile says where a pitch ranks against the whole population, from 0 to 100. Higher is better, and better depends on the pitch: a sinker wants a low vertical break, so the bar being short is the bar working.

Velocity (mph)
How hard the fastball is thrown. The loudest number and the least complete one: it is one of five things on this page for a reason.
Spin rate (rpm)
Revolutions per minute. Spin is not good on its own; it is the raw material that movement is made from.
Extension (ft)
How far down the mound the ball is released. More extension means the hitter sees the ball later, which plays like velocity no radar gun records.
Horizontal break (in)
Arm-side run. The movement that turns a barrel into the top half of the ball and a line drive into a ground ball.
Vertical break (in)
Induced vertical break: how much the pitch resists gravity relative to a spinless throw. High is a four-seamer at the top of the zone; low is a sinker that disappears.
